My name is Jenna and I have PKU.
I was diagnosed with Classic PKU at birth, but my identity as a Phenylketonuric has not always been easy to accept. I spent over a decade off-diet and treated food like a recreational drug—even now, not fully understanding the consequences to my brain.
But in 2014, I woke up. I detoxed. I returned to clinic, resumed counting protein and taking formula, and put my health first. It was a hard transition and took several years to finally achieve consistency. Honestly, I’m still working at it; I don’t think I’ll ever claim to be an expert.
But I do believe the lessons I’ve learned are valuable. My protein levels are in range, I’ve had two healthy pregnancies, and I continue to persue new strategies in managing life with PKU
Going back on diet and embracing the PKU community changed my life. It was as if a fog lifted, and I could finally see both the harm I had done to myself and the gifts that came with commitment.
This blog will be an honest account of my experiences, past and present—from kitchen experiments to Maternal PKU. I hope it provides empathy, encouragement, and inspiration to those that need it most.
Thank you for reading! We’re all in this together.
